So, this little Halloween mask idea is based on the ‘One-Piece Mask’ project from my bestselling book ‘Art Shaped’. It’s one of my ‘pure making’ ideas, which basically means that all of the original material gets used up and incorporated into the design.
I’ll share the short making video below, but underneath that I’ll also post a photo of the basic design that I was cutting out. This doesn’t have to be exact, but obviously it helps if it’s close. Some pieces are cut out and then reused, while others are cut and then folded, or pushed into position.
The completed mask
So, here below I’ve added a photo of the basic design. With some of the lines, you have to ‘stop’ cutting where there is a ‘bar’ across the cut-line.
If you watch carefully on the video you’ll see that, when I join the mask back together either side of the eyes, I overlap the pieces just slightly to make the mask pop-out. Also, before attaching the horns I’m creasing them down the centre to make them more 3D . . . you could ‘score’ the centre-line with your scissors first to make this easier (for children) to fold.
Okay, so there you have it. One little devil mask, made from one paper plate, no leftovers, no waste, no mess. ‘Pure Making’. Obviously you could paint these, or even add a layer of paper mache if you wanted them to be more durable and long-lasting.
Have fun with these, but please make sure that you don’t rehash, re-record, or publish this design without consent. All of the ideas I share here are my own creation, and many are based on projects from my own book and so covered by international copyright laws. Thanks.
